Last week we discussed hidden water wasters inside the home. This week we will discuss outside the home.
Outdoor water use is one of the biggest reasons rural homeowners call us for faster refills. From hoses to hot tubs, many hidden outdoor sources can quietly drain a cistern without anyone noticing. Here are the most common culprits we see around properties in the Blue Mountains, Meaford, Thornbury, and surrounding areas.
Outdoor Taps That Don’t Fully Close
Outdoor taps can be deceptive. You think they’re shut off, but the handle isn’t fully tightened or a valve isn’t sealing. Over time, even a slow drip can drain a cistern, especially in shoulder seasons when homeowners aren’t checking outside as often.
What to watch for:
• Loose-feeling taps after freezing weather
• Drips you only see up close
• Water pooling under decks or near foundations
A quick check every few weeks helps catch issues before they become bigger problems. Also, in the winter or when you wont be using outdoor taps for a long period, turn off the interior shutoff for outdoor taps.

The Hose Left “Just a Bit On”
This is one of the most common causes of wasted water. A hose left cracked open behind a shed or garage can drain a cistern overnight.
Signs:
• Hose ends still pressurized
• Damp soil or wet tracks
• Unexplained overnight water loss
A simple walk around the property (especially after yard work or when kids help outside) goes a long way.

Hot Tubs Slowly Losing Water
Hot tubs can lose water through small leaks or evaporation even when the cover is on, and many homeowners don’t notice until the cistern drops faster than expected.
Look for:
• The water level drops noticeably between uses
• Damp spots around the base of the tub
• The pump running more often than usual
• Steam escaping around an older or poorly insulated cover
If you’re unsure whether the loss is normal evaporation or something more, comparing the water level over 24 hours can give you a good sense of what’s happening.
Staying Ahead of Outdoor Water Loss
• Walk your property once a month
• Check hoses and taps after storms or freezing nights
• Keep an eye on hot tub water levels
• Inspect hydrants at the start and end of each season
These simple habits help prevent unnecessary water loss and extend the time between deliveries.
