Troubleshooting Common Pool Water Issues

Few things beat the joy of a refreshing dip in a clean, clear pool. But when the water turns cloudy, green, or just plain off, it can quickly turn that joy into frustration. If you’re having trouble keeping your pool water balanced, you’re not alone.

Here are a few of the most common pool water issues, and how to fix them quickly so you can get back to swimming.

1. Cloudy Water

What it looks like: Water that’s hazy or milky, making it hard to see the bottom of the pool.

Possible causes:

  • Unbalanced pH or alkalinity
  • Poor circulation or filtration
  • Not enough sanitizer (chlorine, bromine, etc.)

Fix it:
Test your water’s pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. Run your filter continuously for at least 24 hours and consider using a clarifier. If the problem persists, a shock treatment may be needed.

2. Algae Growth

What it looks like: Green, yellow, or black patches on walls or in corners – often slimy.

Possible causes:

  • Low chlorine levels
  • Poor circulation or filtration
  • Warm, sunny conditions accelerating algae growth

Fix it:
Brush affected areas and shock the pool. Run your pump and filter continuously for at least 24 hours. Prevent it in the future with consistent chlorine levels and weekly maintenance.

3. Strong Chemical Smell

What it smells like: A sharp chlorine odor – often mistaken for “too much chlorine.”

Possible causes:

  • Actually caused by too little free chlorine, and a buildup of chloramines

Fix it:
Shock your pool to break up chloramines and rebalance sanitizer levels. A properly balanced pool shouldn’t have a strong chemical smell.

4. Foamy Water

What it looks like: Bubbles or foam on the water surface, especially when jets are on.

Possible causes:

  • High levels of algaecides or other chemicals
  • Soap or residue from bathing suits or pool toys

Fix it:
Use an anti-foam product and avoid overusing algaecides. Rinse swimsuits before use, and ensure toys and floats are clean before they enter the water.

5. Staining or Discoloration

What it looks like: Brown, green, or bluish stains on the liner or floor.

Possible causes:

  • Metals in the water (like iron or copper)
  • Imbalanced pH allowing metals to oxidize

Fix it:
Keep pH levels steady. If you’re in an area with well water or older plumbing, metal content can be higher – let us know when booking and we’ll work with you to help prevent this.
