Thinking about building a backyard ice rink this winter? It’s a Canadian classic: cheap entertainment, good exercise, and a great way to get kids outside. But once you start pricing lumber, liners, and rink kits, the next big question hits fast:
How much water do I actually need to fill a backyard rink?
Let’s break it down simply so you can plan your water delivery.
The Quick Answer
Most backyard ice rinks need between 3,000 and 8,000 litres of water to start, depending on size, slope, and ice depth.
Here’s a quick guide using a 2-3 inch base layer, which is ideal for a strong, smooth rink.
| Rink Size | Water Needed (Approx.) |
| 12′ x 20′ | 3,000–3,800 litres |
| 16′ x 32′ | 5,000–6,500 litres |
| 20′ x 40′ | 7,500–9,500 litres |
| 40′ x 80′ (small community rink) | 25,000–32,000 litres |
Why Depth Matters
You don’t need a deep rink. 2-3 inches of ice is strong enough for skating. Anything deeper than that just wastes water and takes longer to freeze.
But here’s the catch: if your yard isn’t level, you’ll need more water to compensate on the low side. A 4-inch slope adds thousands of extra litres.

Checking Your Backyard Slope
Before you order water, do a quick slope check:
- Place a board or 2×6 on the ground.
- Put a level on it.
- Measure the gap between the board and the ground at the low end.
If the gap is:
| Slope | What It Means |
| 1-2 inches | Perfect – minimal extra water needed |
| 3-4 inches | Plan for 25-40% more water |
| 5+ inches | Consider building up the low side with snow or extra framing |
At Mountain Services, we fill backyard rinks across Grey, Bruce, Owen Sound, Meaford, Collingwood, and The Blue Mountains every winter no pump required. We run the water gently to protect your liner and foundation.
How Many Truckloads Do I Need?
We deliver 15,500 to 20,000 litres per load, so most rink fills are just one or two loads.
| Rink Type | Truckloads |
| Small family rink | 1 load |
| Medium backyard rink | 1 load |
| Large backyard rink | 1-2 loads |
| Community rink | 2 loads |
Pro Tips From Winter Rink Builds
- Use a white liner to reflect sunlight and protect the ice.
- Flood in one shot if the weather is cold enough, don’t drag it out.
- Wait for -5°C or colder before filling to prevent soft edges.
- Pack the snow base before laying your liner to protect against punctures.
- Top up mid-season – we do quick touch-up fills if you get melt or rain.
