Cisterns can accumulate dirt, debris, and bacteria over time. If not cleaned regularly, this can compromise the quality of the water stored within them. Contaminated water can lead to health issues and even damage your plumbing system. Therefore, routine cleaning is vital to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your water storage system.

When to Clean Your Cistern

Knowing when to clean your cistern is the first step in effective maintenance. Here are some signs that it’s time to clean:

Signs Your Cistern Needs Cleaning

  1. Discolored Water: If the water coming out of your taps is discolored, it’s a clear sign that your cistern needs cleaning.
  2. Odor: Any unusual or foul smells coming from your water supply indicate bacterial growth.
  3. Sediment: Visible sediment in your water is a sign that your cistern contains dirt and other particles.
  4. Decreased Water Pressure: A sudden drop in water pressure might indicate blockages caused by debris in your cistern.

Regularly checking for these signs can help you determine the optimal times for cleaning.

Cleaning the Cistern

Cleaning your cistern involves several steps to ensure all dirt, debris, and bacteria are removed effectively.

Cleaning Guide

  1. Drain the cistern: Pump out water in the cistern to a 6-8” level.
  2. Evacuate solids and sediment : high pressure water cuts and loosens any sediment and debris with simultaneously removing it with suction.
  3. Rinse : Utilize high pressure clean water to clean and rinse all surfaces and evacuate water
  4. Inspect: Inspect the cistern for any remaining dirt or debris. If necessary clean and rinse again.

Post Cleaning

  1. Refill the cistern: utilize clean municipally treated water to fill the cistern with clean water.
  2. We recommend that you utilize municipally treated clean water in your cistern for ongoing water supply to maintain a clean, safe supply of water for your family.
  3. Ensure the cistern is sealed to prevent the entrance of dirt, debris and animals. Make sure the cover is secure and in good condition.
  4. Monitor regularly for symptoms that indicate your cistern needs cleaning

Regular cistern cleaning and maintenance are essential for ensuring the safety and quality of your water supply. By cleaning and maintaining your cistern, you can keep your cistern in top condition and enjoy clean, safe water for all your needs. Your efforts will pay off in the long run, ensuring a reliable and safe water source for your house.
